Russell Maryland was lightly recruited out of Chicago. Thankfully for Miami he went on to become one of the greatest defensive linemen in Hurricane history. Maryland was redshirted his freshman year as he dropped 50 pounds to achieve a playing weight of 273. His breakout game came against Michigan as a sophomore in 1988. Maryland was able to play against All-America John Vitale. After the game, Maryland said to himself, “You know what, I have arrived. I can hang with the big boys, if I hung with John Vitale.” Maryland was right. He went on to tally 279 tackles, 25 tackles for loss, and 20.5 sacks in his career. Maryland helped the Hurricanes to two national titles, four bowl wins, a perfect home record and a 44-4 overall record in his four seasons in Coral Gables. In his senior season, Maryland was the Defensive MVP of the Cotton Bowl and became the first Miami Hurricane to win the Outland Trophy. Russell is the eighth Miami player or coach to enter the College Football Hall of Fame. He was the first pick in the 1991 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. Maryland helped the Cowboys win three Super Bowls, played in the 1993 Pro Bowl and started 140-of-154 games in his 10-year career. He posted 375 tackles, 24.5 sacks and forced nine fumbles as a pro.
